As Palestine and Israel are mired in violence and suffering, PWS&D is prepared to respond to the humanitarian needs. The Presbyterian Church in Canada stands in solidarity with all the people of the region, who are enduring the devastating consequences of continued violence and strife.

The ongoing hostilities have created a humanitarian crisis, with homes, schools, medical facilities and crucial infrastructure having been extensively damaged or destroyed. The conflict has led to a significant mass displacement—1.4 million out of Gaza’s 2.2 million residents are currently displaced.

PWS&D’s humanitarian response will assist with shelter, food, livelihoods, emergency health, psychosocial and mental health support, as well as cash assistance to allow people to purchase the goods they require.

Donations made to PWS&D are eligible to be matched by the Government of Canada through the Humanitarian Coalition’s Gaza Emergency appeal. Donations made between October 7 and November 12 will be matched, up to a total of $10 million. Please click on Donations Matched to donate to PWS&D's Gaza appeal or give in your envelopes and write Gaza on the Special Missions line.

On October 7, the province of Herat in western Afghanistan was struck by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake. A series of aftershocks followed. To date, the United Nations estimates that over 12,000 people have been affected. Both the number of affected households and casualties are expected to rise as assessments continue.

Food security, already a significant challenge in the country, is also an immediate priority. Additionally, psychological support for survivors and child-friendly spaces for children will be necessary to help address trauma.

PWS&D is responding through the ACT Alliance and its long-term partners in Afghanistan. To support this emergency response in Afghanistan, please click on the photo and select Afghanistan Relief in the dropdown menu. You can also donate by calling the office at 1-800-619-7301 x291.
